The Canadian manufacturer of child safety car seats sold under a variety of brand names has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 800,000 car seats due to a faulty button for releasing and locking the harness.
Dorel manufactured the car seats under the brand names Safety 1st, Cosco, Quinny, Maxi-Cosi brands, Disney and Eddie Bauer. The recall affects seats produced under those brand names between May 1, 2001 and April 30, 2009.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the harness lock and release button does not always return to its locked position as it is designed to do. This can lead to a loose harness, which may increase the risk of injury to a child in a car accident. Dorel says affected car seat owners will be provided with a tube of lubricant to apply to the strap adjuster to get the button to lock into place as intended.
Consumers can check the Dorel website for specific seat production numbers and recall instructions.
