A young mother and her nine-month-old daughter were rescued from a burning SUV by two CHP officers following an accident on the 55 freeway, according to a news report.
The California Highway Patrol said that Officers Tim Montoya and Daryl Hansen responded to a report of a car fire on the 55 freeway at the 17th Street off-ramp in Santa Ana. They found a crying baby facedown on the floorboards of the vehicle and a semi-conscious woman in the passenger seat. A man and a crying toddler were next to the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe, which was on fire.
Montoya pulled the baby out of the car and returned to help Hansen rescue the mother, 22-year-old Kathy De Rosa of Santa Ana. The SUV driver — Leonardo Morales, 22, of Santa Ana — was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he drove the SUV off the freeway and hit a tree.
The baby and toddler were taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in serious condition. De Rosa was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in serious condition, with lacerations to her face.
