Sixteen year old Kyle Zuleg from Naperville, Indiana was killed in a tragic camping accident. Zuleg sustained fatal injuries and a 13 year old boy was hospitalized after a one-ton tree branch fell 40 feet and pinned the boys beneath it. Both boys were alive when rescue personnel arrived at the scene, and Zuleg died later in the hospital. The unnamed 13 year old boy is expected to recover from his injuries.
The boys were on an annual camping trip with their families at the Will County Forest Preserve in Indiana when the accident occurred. The limb fell after dark, when the boys were playing a game of flashlight tag. Everyone in the area reportedly heard a large crack when the limb broke, but nobody could see where it was falling because of the darkness.
Zuleg was reportedly a “good kid” who was outgoing, loved the Green Bay Packers, and was a member of the Neuqua Valley High School volleyball team. Zuleg had aspirations of becoming a sportscaster.
The Will County Forest Preserve is reviewing its limb-trimming and brush clearing procedures as a result of the death, but say such incidents are uncommon. A representative of the forest preserve says that the staff regularly checks for fallen brush and tree limbs in the Messenger Woods portion of the preserve where the boys were camping.
