A 26-year-old Mission Viejo Air Force veteran was stabbed to death while trying to protect his younger brother from an attacker at the “NYE OC” bash.
Robert Sickles was killed and a childhood friend, Brian McTeigue, was injured when they attempted to stop 23-year-ol Adam Randy Baker of Dana Point from assaulting Sickles’ younger brother, David, as they were leaving the NYE OC event at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa hotel.
According to a news report, Baker flicked a cigarette at the two Sickles brothers and McTeigue as they were leaving the event. Baker then started arguing with David Sickles, when Robert stepped in. According to prosecutors, Baker then pulled out a knife, slashing Robert Sickles across the chest and stabbing him. When McTeigue jumped in, he was stabbed once in the back. Robert Sickles was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where McTeigue continues to recover.
Several people who attended the event, presented by Ones We Love Inc., a Newport Beach event marketing firm, have posted online comments alleging that the NYE OC bash was oversold and that there was little security present. Hundreds of people waiting outside were reportedly drinking alcohol, and became angry when turned away because of overcrowding.
Baker has been charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of attempted murder, as well as a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.
