The 15-month-old son of MMA fighter and commentator Marcus Kowal was killed after an alleged drunk driver hit his stroller in a Hawthorne crosswalk, according to a news report.
Hawthorne police said that Liam Kowal was in a stroller pushed by his 15-year-old sister when they were both hit by an SUV driven by 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins. They were in a crosswalk on Hawthorne Bvld. at 133rd Street when the incident occurred. Higgins attempted to leave the scene but was stopped by witnesses who followed her and surrounded her vehicle until police arrived.
Responding officers were able to revive Liam, who was not breathing when they arrived, and he was taken to a local hospital where he later died. His sister suffered leg injuries and was also hospitalized.
Higgins was not injured. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run and may face additional charges of driving under the influence causing death, or murder.
