A 78-year-old woman has died and her pilot was seriously injured when the small plane they were in lost power and crashed into a retail center parking lot in San Diego, according to a news report.
A helicopter pilot who had just taken off from Montgomery Field said that he heard the female pilot radio the control tower that she had lost power on takeoff. The 1988 Mooney M-20L single-engine plane clipped the top of a Target store and crash-landed in a parking lot that serves both Costco and Target in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood.
Witnesses said that the plane immediately caught fire, but that the flames were quickly put out. The victim was identified as Joy Gorian and the pilot has been identified as her daughter, Devon Logan, 52, of San Diego. Logan was seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital; she is expected to survive.
The plane’s wreckage is being transported to Phoenix, where the National Transportation Safety Board will examine it as part of its investigation into the crash.
