A 26-year-old Santa Ana man who is a Los Angeles police officer is suspected of driving drunk and causing a three-car crash on the 605 freeway in Whittier that killed three people from Riverside.
The California Highway Patrol said that Edgar Omar Verduzco was off-duty at the time of the fatal accident. Verduzco was allegedly speeding in the carpool lane of the southbound 605 freeway when he rear-ended a Nissan and a Scion. The Nissan burst into flames and the three people in the car — a Riverside couple and their teenage son — were trapped inside and died. The victims have been identified as Maribel and Mario Davila and their son, Oscar.
The driver of the Scion — Berly Alvarado, 31, of Wilmington — was injured. Verduzco was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a broken nose and then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter.
According to news reports, Verduzco had posted a “Don’t Drink and Drive” video on Instagram just three hours prior to the fatal DUI crash.
