Two Orange County men were injured when the small plane they were in crashed on a ranch north of the San Luis County Regional Airport. Authorities did not identify the two men, who were both taken to a local hospital. The plane’s pilot was in serious condition, while the passenger was described as “banged up but conscious”.
The plane – a 1943 Aeronca O-58B – was registered to 66-year-old Jeffrey B. Welles of Newport Beach. Welles, who has a current pilot’s license, is the former chief financial officer for California Prudential Realty and is currently president of a small financial services company.
According to a news report, the pilot contacted controllers at the San Luis County Regional Airport, said he had an emergency and that he was going down. The plane hit several trees during the descent and then crashed on a ranch four miles north of the airport.
