Three people were killed and two others were injured after a helicopter crashed into a Newport Beach home at Egret Court and Shearwater Place.
The four-seat Robinson R44 helicopter carried four people and a fifth person on the ground was also involved in the crash. According to reports, the helicopter had taken off from nearby John Wayne Airport before it crashed into the side of a corner-lot home.
Several neighbors rushed to the scene to help, and two of them pulled the pilot out of the wreckage. Responding firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the other three people from the downed helicopter. The names of the dead and injured have not yet been released.
The helicopter is owned by Spitzer Helicopter Leasing in Canyon Lake and was leased to Revolution Aviation, a flight school based at John Wayne Airport. According to National Transportation Safety Board records, the R44 model helicopter has been involved in two other serious accidents in Southern California over the last year, one in Santa Barbara and another in Sherman Oaks.
The NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the deadly helicopter crash.
