An Orange Unified school bus transporting middle school students home from El Rancho Charter Middle School crashed into a tree, injuring 11 students and the bus driver, according to a news report.
The California Highway Patrol said that the bus was traveling on Nohl Ranch Road in Anaheim Hills when it left the roadway, jumped a curb and smashed into a tree and a lamp post. Eleven students were injured, including two who sustained critical injuries. The bus driver – Gerald Rupple, 24 — was also critically injured, and had to be cut from the bus by rescuers. Five students were taken to area hospitals for treatment and two were taken to a trauma center. The other injured students were treated at the scene and released to their parents. The bus driver was taken to UCI Medical Center in critical condition.
According to CHP investigators, there were no other vehicles involved and no skid marks to indicate that the driver tried to stop before the crash. Officials said that the bus may have made an unsafe turn, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
