Ernest Adams, 80, of Newport Beach, was tragically killed Sunday, March 28 after being struck by an alleged DUI driver in Newport Beach.
The deadly bicycle crash occurred at around 3:16 p.m. in the area of 16th Street and Irvine Avenue, near Newport Harbor High School.
Police report that Adams was riding his bicycle on 16th Street when a vehicle failed to stop for the posted stop sign and hit him. Tragically, Adams was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the involved vehicle stopped at the scene and cooperated with the police. Authorities later determined that the driver, identified as Alexis Garcialopez, 20, of Norwalk, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.
Garcialopez was ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI, causing serious bodily injury.
The fatal bicycle crash remains under investigation.
