An eight-year-old Orange County boy has been killed and his mother injured at the Baja 500 off-road race in Ensenada, Mexico, according to a news report.
The boy has been identified as Xander Hendriks of San Clemente; his mother is Melissa Hendriks. His father, Brandon Hendriks, is a youth pastor at San Clemente’s Pacific Coast Church.
Xander and his mother were in Ensenada to watch the Baja 500 off-road race when a truck driven by Todd Pedersen failed to navigate a turn and crashed into the crowd. Xander was pronounced dead at an Ensenada hospital; his mother suffered head and leg injuries and is in stable condition. A third unidentified spectator was also injured.
Pedersen, of Orem Utah, is founder and CEO of Vivint, a smart home technology company based in Provo, Utah. He was not injured in the crash.
