The California Public Utilities Commission has voted unanimously to ban the use of cell phones and other electronic devices by train operators, according to a news report.
The CPUC voted to ban the use of cell phones, pagers, satellite phones and other personal electronic devices by rail transit personnel, making the temporary ban it placed on the use of electronic devices permanent.
The temporary ban was put into place following the 2008 head-on crash between a Metrolink commuter train and a freight train in Los Angeles that killed 25 and injured more than 100 people, which was caused by a train driver who was texting.
The CPUC said the ban would be policed by cameras that will be placed in train operator cabs.
