A 23-year-old Chicago Bears fan fell to his death at Soldier Field during halftime of a game between the Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles. The death has been ruled an accident by the Cook County, Illinois medical examiner’s office.
According to news reports, witnesses told police that Stuart Haverty of Woodstock, Illinois, jumped over a three-foot barrier to reach a ledge where smokers reportedly congregate during a game. Haverty’s father reportedly told Fox Chicago News that, “I don’t even see how something like that could even be available since they know that this was something that was being done all the time. Apparently on his way trying to make it to that ledge he slipped or lost his balance or for all I know he could’ve slipped while trying to light the cigarette.”
Haverty fell about 35 feet from the colonnade level at the stadium, landing on a small rooftop on the west side of the stadium. He was pronounced dead an hour later at a local hospital. Chicago police are conducting an investigation into Haverty’s death.
