A driver reaching for his laptop who rear-ended a truck, sending it into a crosswalk and killing a baby in a stroller, has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
According to a news report, Robert Anthony Casares, 50, of Huntington Beach received a sentence of three years of informal probation, and was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service as a school crossing guard as well as donate $5,500 to the Joyful Child Foundation.
Casares was driving on Springdale Street in Huntington Beach last September when he became distracted while going over some train tracks that bumped his laptop loose on the passenger seat of his Chevrolet Tahoe. When reaching for the laptop, he failed to see that traffic in front of him had stopped. He rear-ended a pick-up, sending it into a crosswalk and killing 4-month-old Ruby Rose Gould, who was in a stroller being pushed by her mother, Renee Gould.
Renee Gould suffered a fractured vertebrae and dislocated shoulder; her 11-year-old niece had a broken leg.
