The family of Paul Quintanar, 19, who was killed on Sept. 8 after being struck by vehicles on a freeway while attempting to elude police, wants more details from Tustin police about the fatal accident, according to a news report.
Tustin police had initially reported that officers encountered Quintanar and a girl in an alley behind a 7-Eleven convenience store and witnessed the victim holding an open can of beer. Officers also reported that the victim had concentrated cannabis on him; the family says Quintanar had a medical card for the cannabis.
Authorities said that sometime during the encounter, Quintanar took off on foot and ran onto the southbound off ramp of I-5. He was struck in the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes of the southbound I-5 and died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries to the head.
Quintanar’s family said their son suffered from panic attacks and that this may have been the reason he ran. They allege that the Tustin police have been uncooperative in providing more information about the incident and are refusing to release the police report, citing “potential litigation.”
