A 71-year-old Lake Elsinore man was killed less than a second after he pushed his wife clear from an oncoming Metrolink train in Dana Point.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department said that Ernest and Jacqueline Gibson were taking a walk near a Dana Point RV campground when they came upon a group of transients under an overpass and decided to change their route to cut across some train tracks. They looked for a train and felt the tracks for any vibrations; not seeing or feeling anything, they started across. As they reached the middle of the tracks, Jacqueline Gibson heard her husband shout that a train was approaching. He pushed her to safety before the train struck and killed him.
Metrolink officials said that the Gibsons were walking in a restricted area, but according to Jacqueline Gibson, there were no signs, fences or security to indicate the area was restricted. She said that the train did not blow its horn before it was too late and that it was way too easy for pedestrians to wander in to the area.
