Nine people have been injured after a big-rig smashed through a median on northbound I-5 and crashed into seven vehicles, according to a news report.
The California Highway Patrol said that the semitrailer was traveling north on I-5 at Camino de Estrella when it suddenly jackknifed, crashed through the median divider and into the southbound lanes of I-5. Nine people suffered minor to moderate injuries, including two children ages 1 and 3 that were in a car with their father.
Eight of the victims were taken to trauma centers at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, UCI Medical Center in Orange and Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Another victim was taken to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in San Clemente.
Authorities investigating what caused the big-rig driver to lose control of the vehicle said that one witness reported the big-rig was cut off by a purple truck hauling cars; the CHP is looking for any witnesses to aid its investigation. Anyone with information can call 949-487-4000.
