The man killed in a crash at at 2:30 a.m. Friday, June 15, on the Southbound freeway north of the Seal Beach exit have now been identified. The OC coroner listed 39-year-old Tarun Katara of Irvine as the man killed along with his still unidentified three-year-old son.
Katara and his son died at the scene of the accident while his wife and 10-year-old daughter were rushed to a hospital with moderate and serious injuries respectively.
A 47-year-old woman who was driving the other vehicle involved in the crash was taken to the hospital as well with moderate injuries.
The OC Register reports that the accident happened when Katara’s vehicle (2011 Honda CRV) became disabled and the father and son exited the vehicle when they were hit from behind by a 2006 Toyota Rav4. The surviving members of the vehicle had remained inside the vehicle.
Officer Duane Graham of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) offered words of warning regarding the incident saying, “This is a highway. If you become disabled for any reason, if you can’t safely make your way to the shoulder, you want to stay within the vehicle if you can, keep everyone restrained within the vehicle and call 911 to get help.”
An investigation of the crash is currently underway by the CHP.
