Two Metrolink train crashes — one in Orange County and the other in Los Angeles County — have resulted in the deaths of two people.
One person was killed and another person was injured when they were hit by a Metrolink train in Dana Point. The Metrolink OC train 609 was traveling from Oceanside to Los Angeles. Both victims were in a non-pedestrian area; one was killed instantly and the other had unspecified injuries. The deceased victim has been identified as Ernest Gibson, 71, of Lake Elsinore.
In Los Angeles County, a 24-year-old woman was killed when she fell from a platform in Sylmar onto the tracks of the station in the 12200 block of Frank Modugno Drive near San Fernando. Witnesses said she was facing the tracks when she turned and slipped backwards off the platform. Her boyfriend jumped onto the tracks and attempted to move her to safety, but had to jump out of the way of an oncoming train before he could move her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
