An 18-year-old woman has been killed and two other people were injured when the car they were traveling in on their way to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio crashed on I-10 in Banning.
The California Highway Patrol said that Ginevra Gallone-Latte was a passenger in a BMW 328i driven by Cesar Hernandezozuna, 21, who let the car drift onto the dirt shoulder of I-10. The BMW then traveled down an embankment and hit two trees. Gallone-Latte was in the back seat of the BMW, which was sheared in half; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 16-year-old girl was in the front seat of the BMW and sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. She and Hernandezozuna were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
CHP investigators said that it appears the BMW was speeding at the time of the fatal crash. The investigation is ongoing.
