Four people playing croquet in Shiffer Park in Costa Mesa were injured after they were struck by a falling tree.
The Costa Mesa Fire Department said that four senior citizens were playing croquet under a ficus tree at Shiffer Park in the 3000 block of Bear Street when a 50-foot section of the trunk fell on them. One of the injured was treated at the scene; three others were transported to Hoag Memorial Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
A bystander said that an elderly woman was hit by one of the largest branches, and that smaller branches fell on the rest of the group.
