A horrific multi-vehicle car crash in Irvine left a 24-year-old mother dead and nine people hospitalized in Irvine on Thursday, April 23.
The fatal car crash occurred on the 5 Freeway near the Alton Parkway exit in Irvine at approximately 1:30 a.m. resulting in a pile-up of at least nine vehicles.
The young mother was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. A 6-month-old boy was found alive in his car seat in the back of her vehicle. He was among those injured in the car accident taken to a local trauma center after being rescued from that vehicle. The 6-month old is reportedly in critical condition.
Among the children hospitalized from the crash were a 10-year-old and 11-year-old whose conditions are currently unknown.
Police state they arrested a 22-year-old male driver on suspicion of DUI. While his name has not yet been released police did state that he drove a gray Dodge Charger and was a resident of Nevada.
Police report that first responders found the suspect nearly unconscious and throwing up on the side of the highway and that he had been traveling in excess of 100 mph .
An on-duty Uber driver in a Prius stated that his vehicle had been the first one struck in the chain reaction collision.
“He was going about 90. I check my speedometer periodically — I was going 60,” the Uber driver said.
He added that 10 minutes went by before more cars piled in.
