A 17-year-old girl was tragically killed Tuesday morning, April 12, after being struck by a van in Buena Park.

The fatal van crash happened at approximately 6:05 a.m. in the area of Western Avenue and Fillmore Drive.

A video from a neighbor’s security camera shows two females walking into the middle of the street to get a closer look at something in the road. Neighbors report that there had been a dead cat there since the night before.

A woman took a step forward to get even closer to the cat, the video shows, while the other person remained behind and was struck.

The victim’s name was not immediately available, but the Orange County Coroner’s Office confirmed she was 17 years old.

The driver pulled over, cooperated with police and was not arrested.

Two weeks ago, a woman was hit while crossing the intersection. One neighbor stated that many residents cross there, even though there isn’t a crosswalk, as a shortcut to stores and shopping nearby. There is a yellow yield sign, but many drivers ignore it, she said.
