A tragic accident on the 15 Freeway in Corona has police searching for the driver of a big rig truck that fatally struck another driver earlier this week.

The hit-and-run on the southbound 15 at El Cerrito Road was reported to the CHP at 3:55 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21.

Authorities have not yet identified the man who was killed but police described him as a 49-year-old Irvine resident.

He drove an Acura that was in an earlier collision with a big rig on the southbound 15. According to police, after the initial crash, the big rig pulled over to the right shoulder but the Acura became disabled on the freeway.

The Acura’s driver and his passenger left the vehicle and went to the freeway shoulder. At some point, the driver returned to the car.

A separate big rig semi-truck then struck the driver as he was getting out of the passenger side of his car. Tragically, the man died at the scene.

According to police, the suspect failed to stop, and continued south on the freeway before turning off at Cajalco Road. The CHP described the suspect vehicle as a white or silver semi-truck pulling white bottom dump trailers.
