Sixty-seven-year-old James McKane was killed when struck from behind by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle along Chapman Avenue in Fullerton on Thursday morning, Aug. 18. Jonathan Ocampo has been arrested in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.

The driver of the pick-up truck ran away on foot following the fatal crash.

According to police, the fatal bicycle accident happened after 5 a.m., when James McKane was westbound on Chapman near Ladera Vista Drive when he apparently was hit by a Ford F-250, with the impact throwing the man into a planter.

The man was rushed to a hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

A witness reported that the truck driver blew a tire and kept driving on the rim. A truck matching the vehicle’s description was later found about four miles away from the fatal bicycle collision. A witness told police that they saw the driver get out of the truck and run into the neighborhood.

Ocampo, a 21-year-old Anaheim resident, later turned himself in. Police arrested him for felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. He is being held on $500,000 bail.
