A three-month-old baby was killed when she was ejected from her stroller by a chain reaction car collision caused by a distracted driver in Huntington Beach.

The driver, 50-year-old Robert Anthony Casares of Huntington Beach, became distracted when his laptop slid off the passenger seat of his SUV.  When he reached down to retrieve it, he failed to notice that traffic in front of him had stopped.  He rear-ended a pick-up truck, sending it into a crosswalk where Renee Gould, 31, was walking with her baby in a stroller, accompanied by her niece, 11, and 7-year-old nephew.  The baby, three-month-old Ruby Rose Gould, was ejected from her stroller; she died later from blunt force trauma to the head.  Renee Gould suffered a fractured vertebrae and dislocated shoulder; her niece sustained a broken leg and the nephew was not injured.

The Goulds were visiting Orange County from Australia.  Casares has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.
