A California tour bus overturned on a Phoenix highway recently, killing six passengers and injuring all other 17 people on board. The bus, which was operated by Van Nuys, California based Tierra Santa Inc., reportedly hit a pickup and rolled over, ejecting six passengers who died of their injuries.

The bus was traveling its regular route from central Mexico to Los Angeles and was carrying 22 passengers. Arizona police said the bus rollover caused a second accident when another vehicle slowed down and was hit by a sedan.

At least six of the injured passengers were listed in critical condition at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, with life-threatening injuries including broken spines and pelvises and serious head injuries. Those injured included the bus driver and an 11 year old boy.

Police are investigating the accident, and will be looking into whether the driver was fatigued as well as the maintenance history of the bus. The local news station reported that the carrier had lost its authorization to operate in April of 2009, and that the company has a long history of safety violations.
