A 52-year-old Caltrans maintenance worker was struck by a car and killed while he was picking up trash along the northbound I-15 connector ramp to the eastbound 94 in San Diego County, according to a news report.

Richard Gonzalez is the third Caltrans employee to be killed on California highways in the past two months.  Stephen Palmer, Sr. was hit by a trolley and killed near San Diego on May 4, and Jaime Obeso was killed by a car while he was working on I-8 in Imperial County on June 7.

Following Gonzalez’ death, all Caltrans employees were pulled off roadways for a review of safety procedures.  Caltrans currently posts electronic notices on highway signage boards, urging motorists to be aware of employees working in the area.

According to Caltrans, 178 Caltrans employees have died on the job since the 1920s.
