Costa Mesa Man Dies in Suspected DUI Pedestrian Accident

A 64-year-old Costa Mesa man has died after he was struck by a driver suspected of DUI on a Costa Mesa sidewalk, according to a news report.

Costa Mesa police said that Jorge Alcazar Arellano was walking on a sidewalk in the 1900 block of Newport Boulevard when he was hit by a Mercedes SUV. The SUV driver — Anna Marie McPherson, 45, of Irvine — was driving south on Newport Boulevard when she drove off the road and crashed into two light poles, an electrical box, a bus bench and a tree before hitting Arellano.

Arellano was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead. McPherson, who had two children in the SUV with her, was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs, causing injury. Neither she nor the children were injured in the crash.
