Mara Steves, 48, of Laguna Niguel was killed in February while walking near her home trying to find the owner of a lost dog.

Standing near the entrance of her neighborhood, Steves was struck by a car that had been sent onto the sidewalk by a car running a red light at a Moulton Parkway intersection.  Now, the City of Laguna Niguel says it is taking a closer look at the traffic on Moulton Parkway, focusing on a series of intersections between Moulton Parkway and residential streets.

According to a news report, the city said it has investigated the intersection at the site where Steves was killed, and concluded that the crash that caused her death appeared to be random.  City Manager Tim Casey said that the intersection “has almost a nonexistent accident history.”

The City Council voted to direct the Laguna Niguel Police Department to increase its enforcement of speed limits on Moulton Parkway as time and personnel allows, and also directed city traffic staff to review signage, sight distance and traffic signal visibility on the road.
