An 88-year-old woman was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street in Santa Ana on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
According to police, the preliminary investigation suggests the fatal pedestrian accident happened when the vehicle in question was turning left onto eastbound Willits Street from southbound lanes of Sullivan Street. Santa Ana Police were alerted to the accident around noon and arrived to discover her lying injured in the intersection.
The woman was rushed to a hospital, where she was sadly pronounced dead. Her identity has been withheld pending the notification of relatives.
Police have stated that the driver of the vehicle that struck the elderly woman drove off without checking on her. Investigators contacted him a few blocks away at his residence, and he cooperated with authorities.
It was not immediately clear whether the driver knew a person was hit. No arrests were immediately made in connection with the crash, which is being investigated as a possible hit-and-run collision.
