Luis Miguel Noriega was allegedly driving a stolen Chevy Tahoe when police attempted to stop the man for questioning. Noriega fled from police in the vehicle, and police chased him for two and a half miles down Ramona Boulevard in Baldwin Park, California. The high-speed chase ended when Noriega allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a car being driven by Walter B. Williams.

Williams’ car exploded in flames and Williams was thrown from the vehicle with his clothes on fire. A witness to the accident, Tom McGowan, rushed to Williams’ aid, but he was not able to save the thirty-eight year old youth counselor, who died from his injuries.

Williams had just gotten a new job at the Eggleston Youth Center, and was on his way over to the center to pick up his first paycheck when the fleeing Noriega crashed into his car.

Noriega’s car was incapacitated in the accident, and he attempted to run from police on foot. He didn’t get very far – the man was tackled by bystanders who held him for police. He suffered only minor injuries from the accident and / or tackle. Noriega was treated before being arrested on suspicion of murder for Williams’ death. He was also charged with evading police and grand theft auto.
