Last November, Kennedy High School student Sydney Ramirez was struck by a car and killed in a marked crosswalk.  Now, the La Palma City Council has voted to install a traffic light at the crossing along with two small signs that designate the stoplight as “Sydney’s Light”.

The crosswalk at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Watson Street lies within the city limits of two different towns:  La Palma and Cypress.  Both cities commissioned a traffic study, which concluded that a light should be installed due to the heavy use the crosswalk gets because of its proximity to a school.

Ramirez, 16, was struck and severely injured in the marked crosswalk while on her way to school the morning of Nov. 1, 2010.  Three days later, she was removed from life support and died.  A Los Angeles county teacher faces charges of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence in connection with Ramirez’s death.
