A Long Island, N.Y., packaging plant was evacuated after a suspected gas leak sent 25 workers to the hospital for carbon monoxide exposure, according to a news report.

Firefighters who were called to the LaMar Plastic Packaging Co. in Freeport treated an additional 20 workers at the scene for carbon monoxide exposure after they complained of dizziness, headaches and nausea.  A hazardous materials team determined that the carbon monoxide leak likely came from the plant’s gas-fired heaters.

An official with the Freeport Fire Dept. said that indoor air readings in the plant showed carbon monoxide levels of more than 500 parts per million.  Normal levels are less than 5 parts per million.
