A devastating eight-vehicle collision in Los Alamitos claimed the lives of a man and his dog, and left three others injured on Thursday evening, according to authorities.
The tragedy occurred near the intersection of Katella Avenue and Los Alamitos Boulevard around 6:15 p.m., as reported by the Los Alamitos Police Department.
The police department’s spokesperson, Robert Acosta, confirmed that the deceased man and his yellow Labrador retriever were in a midsize SUV and pronounced dead on the scene by arriving paramedics.
Two individuals were extricated from their vehicles by rescue teams and transported to trauma centers, where they are said to be in stable condition. Another person received on-site medical attention and was subsequently released without requiring hospitalization.
While the specifics of the initial collision remained under investigation, Acosta noted that six of the vehicles suffered significant damage, and two others were involved in minor fender-benders.
The precise number of people caught up in the multi-vehicle accident has yet to be determined.
Investigators are at the early stages of piecing together the events leading to the incident. Acosta stated that it was premature to discuss the potential causes of the catastrophic pileup.
