LOS ANGELES, CA (April 17, 2024) – Tragedy struck in the Vermont Square neighborhood where a 22-year-old woman, Maria Jarmaillo-Silva, tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run collision Thursday night at the intersection of Figueroa and West 54th Street. The fatal accident transpired shortly after 9:30 p.m. when a white Ford Explorer engaged in a T-bone crash with a vehicle conveying a family.
Post-collision, the driver of the Ford Explorer, along with accompanying individuals, reportedly abandoned the vehicle and the scene before law enforcement arrived. An assortment of beer cans allegedly plummeted to the ground as the suspects collected their possessions, suggesting possible substance involvement.
Emergency responders pronounced Maria Jarmaillo-Silva dead at the crash site. Amongst the other victims, a young boy of 5 years and a 20-year-old man sustained serious injuries and received immediate transport to a local hospital for urgent medical care.
Following the incident, authorities closed off the relevant section of the roadway to facilitate cleanup operations and the preliminary investigation. As of the latest updates, the Los Angeles Police Department has not released descriptions of the suspects or vehicle occupants involved in the evasion, and they are actively seeking witness cooperation to assist in the case.
