HYDE PARK, CA (March 12, 2024) — In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, a vehicle operated by an individual suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) violently struck a utility pole in Hyde Park, injuring two children. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 52nd Street at approximately 2:00 a.m.
The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, crashed a dark-colored sedan and then attempted to leave the scene. In the car were a 7-year-old and a 5-month-old, along with their mother. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics promptly responded, transporting the baby to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. The current conditions of the mother and the 7-year-old were not specified in the reports.
Authorities arrested the driver—believed to possibly be the father of the children—on suspicion of felony DUI. As the investigation continues, the Los Angeles Police Department urges any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward.
In the wake of the collision, police emphasize the dangers of drunk driving, highlighting the risk it poses to public safety. They advise the community to refrain from operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol, as this significantly impairs judgment and motor skills.
