A high-speed pursuit in Orange County led to a perilous crash on Wednesday afternoon when an SUV driver lost control of the vehicle, flipping it into oncoming traffic, according to authorities. The incident was reported by the Santa Ana Police Department, which confirmed the pursuit originated from a traffic violation with the driver, a parolee-at-large, at approximately 5:10 p.m.
The moment of the crash was captured on video, showing the SUV speeding around a corner at a bustling intersection, tailed by police. Upon cornering, the vehicle skidded, apparently as the driver overcorrected, sending it careening across the median into the opposing lane where it collided with at least one other car.
Law enforcement quickly responded to the crash site, with officers drawing weapons and apprehending the suspect. The short-lived chase extended only a mile and a half and spanned a duration of six minutes prior to its abrupt and violent conclusion.
The suspect was extracted from the vehicle wreckage and promptly taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries deemed non-life-threatening. He was later charged with pursuit and narcotics offenses. Authorities reported no additional injuries among civilians or police officers involved in the incident.
Investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash. For further updates on this story as well as other local news developments, the public can refer to KTLA.
