Michael William Nine of Santa Ana, California was heading north on Spyglass Hill Road near Harbor Ridge Drive on his bicycle when he collided with a truck driven by Jose Luis Huerta Mundo. Nine was riding with a large group of cyclists at the time of the accident.

One of the other cyclists reported that it appeared Mundo’s truck was backing up into the road and almost completely blocking it. His truck collided with Nine’s bicycle as Nine came around a blind curve – despite warnings shouted out by the other cyclists. Nine was taken to Hoag Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

It is not clear to investigators if Mundo struck Nine or if Nine may have fallen on his bike and slid into the path of Mundo’s truck. Therefore, Mundo has not been arrested in relation to the fatal orange County, California bicycle accident.

However he has been detained on an immigration hold after police found out that he had been previously deported from the US; to what country and for what reason is not yet clear. Police have also not determined if Mundo is currently in the United Stated legally or not. Mundo is in custody awaiting a visit from the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency.
