Small Plane Crash in El Cajon Injures 3

The crash of a small plane traveling from an El Cajon airport near San Diego to John Wayne Airport has injured three people, including two Huntington Beach police officers.

Huntington Beach police said that the plane is owned by the two officers — David Alan Roberts and Mark David Van Meter — who are experienced pilots. A third unidentified person was also aboard the single-engine plane, which reported engine problems shortly after departing Gillespie Field. The pilot attempted to return to the airport and made a forced landing a block away in a parking lot, where the plane caught fire.

Roberts and Van Meter were treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital in Kearny Mesa for moderate injuries sustained in the crash; the third person remains hospitalize with more serious injuries. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
