Three people have been killed in a fiery wrong-way crash on I-5 just north of San Diego near Encinitas, according to a news report.
The California Highway Patrol said that the driver of a Mercedes– David Michael Elmore, 29, of Encinitas — drove almost 40 miles the wrong way on I-5 before crashing into another car near Encinitas. The Mercedes was traveling south on I-5 when Elmore made a U-turn at the San Ysidro border crossing and began driving north in the southbound lanes, sometimes at speeds up to 100 mph.
After traveling the wrong way for almost 40 miles, the Mercedes hit a Chrysler sedan in Solana Beach, just north of San Diego. Both cars burst into flames; the Mercedes driver and two people in the Chrysler sedan — identified only as a young couple from La Jolla — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Elmore reportedly did not have a California driver’s license and had multiple previous DUI convictions in Oregon and California.
