A 29-year old Canadian woman visiting California was killed in a head on collision on Highway 1 near Santa Cruz. Her infant son, Kyler, sustained two skull fractures and is in intensive care, but stable and expected to survive.

Jaye Wass was driving northbound up the coast for some sightseeing after spending the afternoon in Santa Cruz watching the sea lions, when a Jeep in the oncoming lane crossed the centerline. Jaye planned to pick up her husband, Mike Wass, in San Jose later that day. Mike works for Adobe and was finishing up a week of business before the family was scheduled to fly home the day after the accident.

The driver of the other vehicle, an unidentified 63 year old Santa Cruz man, died several hours after the crash. According to Mike Wass, the California Highway Patrol told him they smelled marijuana in the cab of the truck driven by the Santa Cruz resident. CHP also told Mike Wass that before the driver died, he admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and said he did not remember the crash.

Mike Wass says his wife was “an amazing person… devoted to her family and friends” and that she enjoyed competitive horseback riding in her free time.
