Two Killed, 5 Injured in I-5 Crash in Irvine

Two Rancho Santa Margarita residents have been killed in a multi-vehicle crash on I-5 in Irvine that also injured five other people, according to a news report.

The California Highway Patrol said that five vehicles were involved in the deadly crash that killed Andrew Hays, 52, and Sherry Butler, 46, both of Rancho Santa Margarita.   The multi-vehicle crash was triggered when a Mitsubishi Mirage crossed three lanes of traffic and crashed into a center divider.  The driver of a silver Acura, identified as a 19-year-old Paramount woman, stopped to help a 26-year-old San Diego man in the disabled Mitisubishi that was sitting in the carpool lane.

Shortly afterwards, a Toyota Camry carrying Hays and Butler hit the Mirage, veered into the right lanes of the freeway and struck a Nissan Altima.   The force of that crash sent the Camry back across the highway and into a Chevrolet Astro van.  Both Hays and Butler were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four people were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, three with traumatic injuries and one with minor injuries.  A fifth person was treated at the scene.
