Five Irvine teenagers killed in a Memorial Day crash have been identified and an Irvine Unified School District official has labeled the tragedy an “unimaginable loss,” according to a news report.
The single-car crash on Jamboree Road near the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach hotel killed Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, 17, who was the driver, and his passengers: Nozad Al Hamawendi, 17; Cecilia D. Zamora, 17; Aurora C. Cabrera, 16; and Robin A. Cabrera, 17. All five teens were from Irvine.
Investigators said they believe excessive speed was to blame for the single-car crash that left the Infiniti Alyahyan was driving split in half after it hit a center divider and slammed into a tree in the median. The Infiniti was traveling southbound on Jamboree Road before it split in two, caught fire and wound up in two pieces in the northbound lanes. Four of the five victims were thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene; the fifth victim died later at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
