Three people have been hospitalized — one in critical condition — after a cement truck failed to stop on a 73 freeway off-ramp and tipped over onto Newport Coast Drive, according to a news report.

The California Highway Patrol said that the cement truck driver — James Andrew Case, 49, of Orange — swerved to avoid stopped traffic at the end of the 73 freeway off-ramp to Newport Coast Drive. He hit a curb, drove onto a dirt shoulder hit a wooden sign and a traffic signal, then collided with a gardening truck. The cement truck continued onto the eastbound lanes of Newport Coast Drive where it tipped over onto a blue BMW i8. Another driver failed to avoid the collision and hit the cement truck.

The driver of the BMW i8 — identified as a 49-year-old Newport Beach woman — and a Santa Ana man driving the gardening truck were hospitalized. Case was also sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Anaheim man who hit the cement truck after it collided with the other two vehicles was not injured.
