8-Year-Old Boy Killed by Newport Beach Trash Truck

An 8-year-old boy on his way home from elementary school was struck and killed by a trash truck in Newport Beach, according to a news report.

The boy was a third grader at Newport Heights Elementary and has not been identified by the Orange County Coroner’s Office, although media reports have identified him as Brock McCann.

Authorities said that the incident happened at the intersection of 15th Street and Michael Place. When Newport Beach Fire Department personnel arrived, they found the boy behind the truck.   He was pronounced dead at the scene from massive injuries.

Investigators with the California Highway Patrol were trying to determine whether the boy was riding or walking his bicycle at the time of the fatal accident. The driver of the trash truck, which is owned by CR&R Environmental Services of Stanton and contracted by the City of Newport Beach, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Authorities said that from the position of the truck on the street, it appeared the vehicle was making a right turn onto 15th Street from Michael Place when it hit the boy. Investigators have not been able to find any witnesses.
