Attorney Spotlight: Meet Callahan & Blaine Senior Trial Attorney Peter Bauman

At Callahan & Blaine, our talent pool is deep. Each month, we publish our “Attorney Spotlight” where we look past the briefcases to see what makes the men and women of Callahan & Blaine tick. How have we won over $2 billion in verdicts and settlements? It’s a team effort of hard work, dedication, experience and savvy litigation. Today, meet Senior Trial Attorney, Peter Bauman!

The Basics:

Name: Peter Bauman

Position: Senior Trial Attorney

Birth city: Laguna Beach, California

Current city: Rossmoor, California

Law school: Pepperdine University

Attorney Q&A:

Q: What attracted you to the legal field?

A: As part of a music law class during my undergrad at USC, our professor brought in a number of attorneys from the industry and I was intrigued by their various stories of legal battles, negotiations, and deal making.

Q: Was there anyone along the way who mentored or influenced your work?

A: The professors at Pepperdine were all excellent and all left their mark. Janet Kerr, the executive director of the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship & the Law was a big influence as well as learning Real Property from constitutional law scholar Douglas Kmiec. Right out of law school, I got to take a significant role in a large complex litigation and learned a lot from several top litigation attorneys. Since joining Callahan & Blaine, I feel that my practice has been taken to an entirely new level as a result of the Callahan & Blaine team.

Q: What do you think sets Callahan & Blaine apart from the rest?

A: The unique and personalized approach to each and every case with the dedication and resources to win. While my practice is primarily focused on real property and complex litigation (e.g. real estate, construction, inverse condemnation/condemnation, associations), Callahan & Blaine handles a diverse set of practice areas and excels in them. Being surrounded by so much talent is inspiring.

Q: Tell us about a case that you are particularly proud of (or was interesting), keeping confidentiality in mind.

A: When I joined Callahan & Blaine, I was immediately thrown into an extraordinarily complex failure to maintain / mobilehome residency law case which was on the eve of trial, having been around for many years.  Through a series of strategic and aggressive motions, we were able to move the court to dismiss the case outright, avoiding a potential multi-million exposure for our client and the other defendant. We then used this victory to secure a significant attorney-fee award against Plaintiff, which was then used to resolve another portion of the case for a mutual walk away.  Finally, we pursued a claim against the City for the nuisance/inverse condemnation, which led to failure to maintain complaints, and recovered $6.75 million for our client. Overall, I view this as a prime example the skill, dedication, and tenacity of the Callahan & Blaine team, which I am proud to be a part of.

Q: What are the things you wish you knew as a junior associate that you know now?

A: The positives of knowing the court staff.  It not only assists in the handling of litigated matters, but also adds a personal touch and enjoyment to the various court appearances.

Just for fun:

  • Favorite TV show: Homeland
  • Family facts, children, pets, etc.: Married to my awesome wife with 1 son and 1 Siberian Husky – Gmork. We recently moved to Rossmoor, up by Los Alamitos / Seal Beach, and love the small town atmosphere and adjacent military bases.
  • Guilty food pleasure: Mango cake from Porto’s Bakery
  • No. 1 bucket list item: Heli-Skiing in Alaska
  • Dog person/cat person: Both.
  • Dream vacation: Heli-Skiing in Alaska with a bunch of family and friends.
  • Favorite high-profile case: OJ Simpson Trial
  • Favorite fictional lawyer (TV, movies): Denny Crane from Boston Legal
