Callahan and Blaine file $40 million Wrongful Death Suit for Family of California Skating Rink Victim

Cherylynn Tang was ice skating at a temporary rink at Great Park with her family on February 14th, 2010 when she slipped on the ice and struck her head. She tragically died of her injuries two days later. Callahan & Blaine has filed a $40 million wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Irvine, California on behalf of Tang’s family in Orange County Superior Court.

Tang reportedly slipped, fell backward and hit her head while exiting the rink. Paramedics treated Tang at the scene before taking her to Western Medical Center, where she later died. The paramedics allegedly did not arrive at Great Park until 20 minutes after the injury occurred. The lawsuit charges that ice rink staff should have been trained to immediately offer emergency assistance to Tang or any other skater who sustained an injury while skating.

The lawsuit further alleges that there was poor oversight of the outdoor ice rink, that Great Park officials did not properly design or maintain the rink, and that proper safety procedures were not followed. The outdoor temperature was 82 degrees that Valentine’s Day, and pools of water had allegedly formed on the ice, causing the fall. Both the City of Irvine and the Great Park Corporation are named in the lawsuit.

An accident like this affects more than just the victim. The Tang family is still grieving deeply from this tragic loss. Mrs. Tang was a wonderful and loving mother, and she has left behind three children who are profoundly affected by this, and will be for years.

This case is tragically similar to a case Callahan & Blaine successfully settled in Orange County, California. In that case two joggers were hit and paralyzed by a drunk driver in the early morning hours. Attorney Daniel J. Callahan knew from previous experience that the intersection was dangerous and that the city of Dana Point, California knew it and had failed to do anything about it. In the Dana Point case, Callahan & Blaine achieved a record-breaking $50 million settlement for the injured joggers, and convinced the city of Dana Point to make the highway safer for pedestrians.
