Authorities said that Alex Cuevas and her dog Cocoa were walking in their neighborhood at Morales Way and Honors Lane when they were attacked after a pit bull escaped from a neighbor’s back yard. The pit bull attacked Cocoa first, and when Cuevas tried to pick Cocoa up to rescue her, the pit bull knocked the girl down and started biting the side of her face. A neighbor hit the pit bull with a shovel to stop the attack.
Cuevas was taken to the hospital and had to have her right ear reattached; Cocoa survived but had to have her left eye reinserted into the socket. Animal control quarantined the pit bill, which was later euthanized.
